Condition and Performance Assessment of Irrigation Infrastructure at Agri-Parks in Gauteng Province, South Africa

South African agriculture accounts for 62% of the national water demand. Almost 45% is wasted. Therefore, irrigation systems need to improve their water-use efficiency (WUE). However, WUE smallholder schemes in country, including Agri-Parks, not precisely known. A study was performed at four Agri-Parks (Rooiwal, Soshanguve, Tarlton, and Westonaria) Gauteng province assess condition performance systems, as part a project that aimed develop model systems. The were equipped with efficient forms drip microjets. assessments system component level February–March 2021. Condition Assessment Model (CAM), developed by ARC-NRE/AE, used assessment. Enumerators observed components visually assigned conditions, which they uploaded into generate indices (CIs). Water conveyance (CE) distribution uniformity (DU) assessed on delivery infield respectively. CI values ranged 4–6, implying significant deterioration had occurred. CE 61–78%, while DU 60–95%. correlated positively DU, suggesting could predict encouraging proposed model. further research covering longer period more recommended.
